The game begins with a short clip of "Classic Sonic" running through the nostalgic Green Hill Zone when he sees a purple entity appear and quickly vanish. The game then changes to a surprise party thrown for Sonic by Tails and all of the Sonic's friends that have been introduced over the years. When suddenly the unknown entity appears and begins taking all of Sonic's friends and lunging them through different portals, Sonic tries to stop him but is quickly defeated and knocked out. The hero wakes up in Green Hill Zone and the game begins.
In this game you switch between both Classic and Modern Sonic on a quest to save his friends which have been thrown into popular levels from three different eras in Sonic history, those being the Classic, Dreamcast, and Modern eras. Classic Sonic plays like a 2D side scroller in a homage to genesis games using his only signature skill he had back then which is the Spin Dash, but you can unlock various other skills by beating different challenges throughout the game. While it's not a perfect copy of the Genesis physics it still makes you feel like you're back in the 90's and it's nice seeing the recent 3D levels transformed into 2D levels. Modern Sonic plays like he did in "Sonic Unleashed" switching between 3D and 2D bursting through levels at high speeds using the homing attack, sliding, drifting, and his stomp move. Much like Classic Sonic it's nice seeing some of the classic 2D re-imagined into 3D levels.
If you haven't checked out this game and have enjoyed playing Sonic in the past I'd recommend you trying it out. I know you'll find something that'll make you smile as the game has some of the more popular levels back and songs. This game has something for both new and old Sonic fans.
