Eternity

So recently I bought the comic book Eternity which is about Kid Eternity. Darrin and I went to the comic book store for the sole intention of finding me a new comic book I could get into every month. Unfortunately, due to inattentiveness I bought a one-shot. :(.
For those of you unfamiliar with the comic book lingo, a one-shot is a comic book that only has one comic. It is only suppose to make a splash, or to test the waters to see if it can become a full blown series. So I sulked for the first five minutes when I realized that it was a one-shot, (PICTURE ME SIMPLY STARING AT ETERNITY FOR FIVE MINUTES) and then thought what the heck might as well read it.

The reason I had grabbed Eternity in the first place was because the cover art looked pretty cool.  (It was creepy and dark.) You see I wanted something different from what I usually get. I normally pick up Superman, Captain American, or Wonder Woman, but here I was like no, I will not get something bright and shiny. Sure my comics sometimes have dark moments, but in the end the hero saves the day and teaches us that though it is difficult to live a peaceful existence it is possible. Yet, just looking at the cover art I knew that it was not going to be that kind of comic. In addition, after reading the first few pages I realized that the protagonist was NOT a teenager. BONUS!
Eternity has had a long history. It was once owned by Quality Comics who later sold it to DC in the 50's. The character's abilities have ranged from being able to summon the craziest historical figures of our time to the present, to summoning people who were demons.
Anyways enough of the history lesson. The character has now changed dramatically. Although, I thought his old powers were pretty cool, the character is now able to bring back the dead and helps them solve their murder. The plot is pretty convoluted but I see that they're trying to give the character an actual personality and a way to relate to him as the character is a recluse who works as a medical coroner.
Although the writing was a little rudimentary and the plot is a perfect launch for a tv series I found  the drawings to be pretty cool. Perhaps it's that I have been paying attention to the drawings more, but I thought it was cool how they were able to draw the ghosts throughout the comics.
Also if you like the underdog saving the day kind of feel then you will probably like it too as this guy seems to be a loser who is going  to  be a great hero.
All in all I give it a B. I would def. buy the next issue if DC thinks that Eternity can get enough of an audience to keep it going. Perhaps I am sucker for comics that have the a TV series kind of feel, or perhaps I am still surprised that anything out of the world of my three super heroes can actually be pretty good I don't know. But I think this comic is worth giving a shot.
